Where Systems and Support Align to BUILD Student Success!
How it begins
Our education system is in desperate need of people to help the figure out how to get the best outcomes for our students and teachers. We must do the work and build the structures to ensure the entire system remains effective, healthy and rooted in purpose.
I knew I would be a teacher when I was 7-years-old.
One day, in my second-grade class, my teacher was asking questions and waiting for us to raise our hands with answers. Naturally, my hand shot into the sky, but when a name was called it was not mine. In fact, it was a student who had not had their hand raised at all. I expressed to her that I didn’t think it was ok to {only} call on people who did not know the answer. Even at that age I understood pressure, and the expectation of student learning without teacher support was not a good teaching tool and so I challenged her. Well, you know where this lead:
The Principal’s office.
Sitting in that chair explaining my case, and being backed up by my grandmother who was an educator herself, I knew I was on to something and I knew what I needed to do.
“When I look at the kids, I see the need and that need is not going to change. The system must change to address it. I still have work to do.”
I believe I was born a teacher. After graduating college, it was all I ever wanted to do, so I did! I taught elementary school for five years, became and Assistant Principal, a Principal for 11 years and then a moved on to Chief Academic Officer, where I served in two districts for 5 years.
Teaching is life for me. I get to see kids work
with
teachers. That day in the second grade I learned one major lesson that has pushed me through my career: Kids need advocates, and so do Teachers. The current educational landscape and the entire system is screaming for advocates. We can hear those screams in our test scores, literacy levels, teacher turnover, and student feedback. I’ve made it my goal to stand in that gap for teachers and students. Our education system is in desperate need of people to help figure out how to get the best outcomes for our students and teachers, and ensure the entire system is centered around systems and support to impact student achievement.
"As I progressed through my career it became clear to me that there was something very broken about the system we were asking our teachers to work inside."
